The ETAPS Association is committed to supporting authors from countries where research funding falls below a specified threshold. This initiative aims to mitigate the disparities in research funding across different countries.
In 2024, the ETAPS Association established ETAPS-F—a program to enable individuals from financially constrained countries to attend the ETAPS conference. This effort addresses the challenges some may face in securing funds for travel and conference fees. Upon meeting the eligibility criteria outlined below, one author of a paper accepted at any of the ETAPS main conferences (ESOP, FASE, FoSSaCS, or TACAS) will receive a complimentary conference registration.
The eligibility criteria for this program are transparent and rely on externally sourced data.
For each paper accepted at one of the main ETAPS conferences, the registration fee can be waived for one author affiliated with an institution in eligible countries, as defined below:
For countries included in the OECD’s Main Science and Technology Indicators (this includes certain non-OECD countries as well): Eligibility is determined for those with an annual Gross Domestic Expenditure on R&D (GERD) below USD 450 per capita, adjusted for Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), based on the latest available data.
For countries not covered by the OECD’s Main Science and Technology Indicators: Eligibility extends to those recognized as Emerging and Developing Economies by the IMF.
There is no requirement for the supported author to present the paper at the conference.
For authors with multiple affiliations, where some are not in the eligible countries, the decision to waive the registration fees will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Should you have any questions regarding the registration fee waiver, or if your situation involves multiple affiliations, please contact ETAPS treasurer.
Following these criteria, in 2025 the waiver will apply to authors from the following countries:
Note that this scheme is in addition to the regular student grants offered for ETAPS participants, which will be announced at a later stage.
